.: in the eye of the storm (2006)
intervention in public space
tree, paper, paint

in the eye of the storm was an intervention in public space in the centre of Newcastle (AU).

The idea originated after one of the biggest storms in the history of Newcastle led to major destructions in the city and even caused a coal ship to ground at Nobby's Beach. As a consequence of the storm many trees lost branches or were disrooted completely.

I decided to play with the 'new look' of the city and its trees and to stick cut-outs onto the remaining body of a tree, which was located in between the City Library and the Newcastle Regional Gallery. The tag 'in the eye of the storm' is also an ironic reference to ongoing discussions in the city council of budget cut-backs in the cultural sector. About one week after my 'beautification' the tree was cut off completely.
